| | | I think Spector and Congress investigating sports when there are millions of other national crisises they should be working on is a sham. What a pile of horse ****, and we are paying for it.

| | | i didn't say i was happy about it, i didn't even say it was the right thing to do. i just posted what the paper said. Goodell closed the case and Specter opened it. the government does a lot of stupid things with our money, imho i think its better than giving it to a country that hates us.

Congress getting involved in sports is ass, plain and simple. Too bad some people (not you) put their hate for the Pats/steroids/the like ahead of rational thinking, and decide to back these investigations.

| | | Matt Walsh speaks, dishes sordid details of Spygate
11:53 PM CDT, May 15, 2008
Former Patriots video assistant Matt Walsh opens up to Andrea Kramer in an interview scheduled to air Friday night on "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel" at 7 p.m. on HBO. Here are some of the highlights:
DID BILL BELICHICK MISINTERPRET THE RULES?
"When I was doing it, I understood what we were doing to be wrong. We went to great lengths to keep from being caught. Just saying that the rules were misinterpreted isn't enough of an apology or a reasoning for what was done."
ON USING THE TAPES
"I had spoken with one of our quarterbacks, uh, that said, he was called into Coach [Bill] Belichick's office shortly before the Tampa Bay game. In the office was Ernie Adams, Charlie Weis and Coach Belichick. They closed the door, [a coach] said to him, 'You know, we've got tape of the Buccaneers coaches defensive signals. What we're going to do is have you learn this, then we're going to have you next to Charlie on the sideline, when he's calling in the play to Drew [Bledsoe, the starting quarterback], over the coach to quarterback communication system. Drew's got the, the earpiece in the helmet, and you're going to tell Charlie the defense that's being called.' "
DID IT WORK?
"All that I know, is, the success rate that it has for the first game against Tampa Bay, and all I know is that it was something that they continued to have me do throughout the two years I worked in video under Coach Belichick."
GETTING AROUND THE CAMERA RULE
"The line of reasoning that we would give to other teams for why we need a third camera setup was, 'Well, our coaches want to have a tight shot of the kicker and the holder ... exchange just to go over with the guys in meetings. You know, they want a tight shot, you know, of the quarterback, you know, just to go over the quarterback's footwork and mechanics in meetings.' "
WAS IT WORTH IT FOR PATRIOTS?
"Yeah, I mean you know, they got caught doing this in 2007, they obviously started doing it when I was there in 2000, I guess that's eight seasons, three Super Bowls…$750,000 [in fines]. ..." |

| | | Pats' Belichick lashes out at ex-video assistant
May 16, 2008 5:52 PM EDT
BOSTON - New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick lashed out at the team's former video assistant Friday, saying in a televised interview that Matt Walsh was a low-level staffer who was fired for "poor job performance." "There's not a lot of credibility," Belichick said in an interview broadcast on "CBS Evening News."
"You know, he's tried to make it seem like we're buddies, and belong to the same book club and all. That's really a long, long stretch."
Belichick acknowledged that he was wrong about NFL rules prohibiting filming opponents signals but insisted there was no intent to hide what he was doing.
"I made a mistake," he said in the interview. "I was wrong. I was wrong."
That rationale has already been rejected by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who fined the coach $500,000 and docked the Patriots $250,000 and its first-round draft pick.
"I didn't accept Bill Belichick's explanation for what happened," Goodell said Tuesday, "and I still don't to this day."
But Belichick repeated that Walsh had been fired for "poor job performance" and for making a tape recording of a meeting with player personnel director Scott Pioli. Belichick has said he didn't even know Walsh.
"For him to talk about game-planning and strategy and play-calling and how he advised coordinators, it's embarrassing; it's absurd," Belichick said. "He didn't have any knowledge of football. He was our third video assistant."
In an interview with HBO scheduled to air Friday night on "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel," Walsh dismissed Belichick's attempts to minimize the impact of the taping. Walsh told HBO he was coached on how to evade NFL rules, and that team officials instructed him on ways to avoid detection.
"When I was doing it, I understood what we were doing to be wrong," Walsh said. "Coach Belichick's explanation for having misinterpreted the rules, to me, that really didn't sound like taking responsibility for what we had done, especially considering the great lengths that we had gone through to hide what we were doing."
Belichick denied telling Walsh to hide what he was doing.
"You look at the tape. You see him filming the game," the coach told CBS. "You tell me how discrete it is."
Belichick's comments came on the same day the Boston Herald printed a front-page story by John Tomase, who wrote on the day before New England's Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants that the Patriots had taped the St. Louis Rams' walkthrough before the 2002 NFL title game.

| | | i think all the football players that seem to be getting arrested is a lot more important than this spygate crap. they ought to crack down on these mental midgets. there making more money than they've ever had in their life and when they get it the players want to live out a childhood the probably missed.

| | | The only problem is, acts of public disruption aren't tolerated if you're an adult. For children, it's expected that the parental figure will deal with the issue, but as you mentioned, not every athlete enjoyed such joys in life.
