I have been discussing the possibility of a trade on the Chargers MB as well. The Bolts GM actually reads that MB occasionally. Consider this response from one of their better posters:

"Dollars left to pay are never a big deal. The problem with dumping some players is the dollars previously paid, and how it was structured. If it was all signing and option bonuses, then those are amortized over the remaining years once they're paid. That causes the cap crunches down the road.

Yet, a guy like Olivea was mostly paid in base salary and roster bonuses. Roster bonuses are not amortized over the remaining years of a contract, but rather, they are treated like base salary and fully included into the year's cap in which they are paid. It's a "pay as you go" type system that SD has used with many of their extensions (and some FA signings like McCree).

I have not read anything on Benson's contract, but I'd bet the problem lies in previous bonuses paid, and the mega-hit of the cap dead space in order to cut him. If he's cut after June 1st (or the Bears use the 2 designated June 1 rules allowed under the new CBA) then his dead space can be amortized over two seasons (2008 and 2009). The 2008 hit would remain at the level it's currently scheduled for this season. Any (and all) remaining non-amortized monies paid in previous seasons would then be fully incorporated into the 2009 cap."

Benson, the fourth pick in the 2005 draft, has earned substantially less money than has been previously reported. His contract has always been said to contain $16 million in guaranteed money, which is accurate, but Benson has yet to activate $3.46 million of that in the form of two $1.73 million bonuses that were considered to be easily attainable. They could be achieved in a myriad of ways with minimum performance levels and play-time figures. But running behind Thomas Jones for two seasons, and now out for the remainder of the year and facing a long rehabilitation, it could wind up being money he never realizes.

From a team standpoint, it should clear up a little salary-cap space moving forward. For Benson, it’s motivation to push him through rehabilitation with one bonus at $1.73 million hanging in the balance for 2008. While Benson has reaped a fortune at $13.8 million through this season, it doesn’t approach the misspent figures that have come out.

we had Benson & Rex last year and finished w/7 wins when our defense was injured beyond recognition


how are we going to have 4 less wins w/a legitimate other back to use instead of Benson (which we didn't have last year), a marginally better o-line (b/c of Williams), a defense which is coming into the year healthy, and facing an easier schedule?

If CB reports for the OTAs and is in good shape, then give him a shot at proving his fitness and desire to play for the Bears. If on the otherhand he fails to report or is in poor shape, then cut him.

Williams stand a chance to make the OL a lot better, though at this point marginally would be correct.

About the last part... That is correct, but nothing like resorting to base insults when someone confronts you about something (inane) you said.

What sucks about that is he has never been a workout warrior, and now that he has an excuse not to be "tip-top", it is a bit worrisome. I hope something kicks in and makes him realize how much talent he has been flushing down the drain, but I won't bank on it.
