Benson arrested on intoxicated boating charge

AUSTIN, Texas — Bears running back Cedric Benson faces criminal charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

Authorities say Benson was operating a 30-foot boat carrying about 15 passengers on Lake Travis on Saturday when he was stopped, then failed a field sobriety test. Officials say an officer had to use pepper spray to subdue Benson.

Travis County Sheriff's Department spokesman Roger Wade says Benson was freed from jail on a $14,500 bond Sunday morning.

The 25-year-old Benson was the Bears' first-round pick in 2005 after starring at the University of Texas.

Bears running back Cedric Benson was arrested for boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest near Austin, Texas, according to KVUE television in Austin.

Both are Class B misdemeanors punishable by up to six months in jail or $2,000 fines. Authorities reportedly had to use pepper spray to subdue Benson before booking him.

Cedric Benson's career with the Bears has been less than smooth, and his Saturday arrest likely won't enhance his stature in the eyes of the organization.

The incident occurred Saturday night, according to the station, and Benson reportedly is out on $14,500 bail.

Benson, who played for the Texas Longhorns in Austin, has been arrested before and was found guilty of breaking into a woman's home in search of a stolen television in 2004. He also was arrested on a marijuana charge.
Benson has been disappointment since being drafted with the fourth pick in the 2005 draft. He's coming off an injury and his status as the team's top pick could be challenged by rookie Matt Forte.

I too believe the drafting of Forte, the injury and bad press has had a negative affect but its down to the coaching staff and Cedric to prove himself..............maybe not a fresh team but a fresh season..........knuckle down and work hard for the new season

Replace M. Turner via the draft and are still looking for another RB. Forte was on their wish list, but they had no second round pick.
