We should have kept him here:
Edmonds must bide his time

PITTSBURGH—Just how short is the leash on Jim Edmonds?
Manager Lou Piniella reiterated Friday he needs "to get Edmonds as many at-bats as possible to see if we can get his bat going," but also conceded Kosuke Fukudome could move from right field to center if the Cubs find another left-handed-hitting option in right.
"We are aware Fukudome can play center field, and play it well," Piniella said. "We are aware of that. Let's hope the situation stays the same, we win some ballgames and we don't have to tinker with anything."
Edmonds, who is 2-for-15 since joining the Cubs and hitting .171 overall, wasn't in the lineup against Pittsburgh left-hander Zach Duke. Nor was Fukudome, as Piniella started Reed Johnson in center and Mark DeRosa in right.
The left-handed-hitting Edmonds might have to wait until next weekend to get consistent playing time. Pittsburgh is starting left-handers Phil Dumatrait and Paul Maholm the last two games of the series.
Rookie Micah Hoffpauir could figure in the mix if Piniella is comfortable with him in right field. He hit .413 in 20 games this spring and delivered two doubles Wednesday night in Houston after hitting .324 with three homers and 12 RBIs in nine games at Triple-A Iowa.
Hoffpauir, who had been sidelined with a strained muscle in his side, had a single off the bench Friday. But he has played mostly first base in his career.
"We have to get a left-handed bat in here who can drive the ball," Piniella said. "If this young man can do that, we'll get him some playing time."
Don't discount the possibility of trades. Cincinnati is shopping both Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. in hopes of clearing room for Jay Bruce, who is hitting .368 with 10 home runs in Triple A. Griffey, stuck at 598, isn't likely to be dealt before he hits his 600th homer.
