I just finished reading a great new book for any Bear fan. Chicago Bears: The Complete Illustrated History by Lew Freedman is a great combination of stories, statistics, pictures and brief biographies.

Lew Freedman is an editor for the Chicago Tribune and author of two dozen books, including:Stadium Stories: Chicago Bears and Game of My Life:Chicago Bears.

What impressed me most about the book was the great mixture of the history of the franchise told chronologically, and the side stories that any Bear fan would want to hear. The side stories are set aside by being printed on orange paper, and are 2 pages long each. The pictures in the book are fantastic also. Many pictures are ones familiar to the avid fan, but some of them are unique (at least to me) and as such bring an even greater value to the words.

I have the great fortune of being able to interview Mr. Freedman about the book and the information contained within it. Check in later this week for the interview!

It's hard to come up with the words to say how proud I am to be a Bears fan. In my opinion, the Bears are one of THE greatest sports teams.. They are so full of history and have produced so many legends. So many I can't name them all... It's also not just the team, it's the fans and the city that make the Bears great. There's one thing that can always bring thousands and possibly millions of people together... and that's watching the Bears play on Sundays and Mondays. There's possibly no greater feeling than hearing thousands cheer in Soldier Field when the Bears go out onto that field. I've been to Soldier Field only once in my life, but it was probably one of the greatest days of my life. I hope I can relive that moment sometime in the future. It's an experience that I'll never forget...

Everyone... be proud being a Chicago Bears fan, and be proud that you are rooting for one of the greatest teams to ever set foot on a field. Be proud that you are rooting for a team that's so full of history and great players... Remember... Go Bears!

This past weekend, a college buddy and I took the long drive up to Canton (8 hours) to pay homage to the greatest game on earth.

First, what fantastic facilities. It has a "mock" field next to the parking lot complete with HOF logo at the 50 yard line. My buddy and I spent time tossing around the football and in general acting as if we were still 10 years old and acting out our fantasies of football greatness. The building itself is surprisingly small, although it seems they are adding wings all the time.

Inside, there is so much to see that you realize immediately that you are in for an all day event. Lots of little things, like ticket stubs, newspaper articles, momentos, etc. They also have numerous interactive computer displays with mountains of narrative and game footage. Good manners kept me from spending all day just looking at old Bears players bio's and game footage.

Also, we had a great opportunity to sit in on a "basement box" session. Basically, the Hall has tons of memorabilia in it's basement, waiting for the opportunity to be on display to the public. While some of it will never make it to public display, other items seem destined for floor space upstairs.

Among the items in the basement box session was a name plate/desk set from George Halas' desk at Bears Headquarters. It seems that the Headquarters suffered a fire in 1961, completely destroying most of the Bears history and films. Story goes that Halas heard about the fire, and rushed to the scene. He ran into the burning building to save what he could. One of the few items he saved was his nameplate/desk set. The volunteers at the Hall, wearing white gloves, showed us the nameplate, complete with melted pens. Just a small example of the multitude of items that they have.

So, without going on for pages and pages, the HOF is truely a must see. No sooner did I walk out then I wanted to go right back in.

BTW, I have created an entire thread showing the pics I took.

So today was the last of the 13 OTA's for this offseason. The Bears had a little fun w/ swapping jerseys. As Larry Mayer put it, "it was like the last day of school out there".

Here is the problem. There is exactly 5 weeks until training camp. Lovie sent everyone home to spend time w/ their families and to take vacation. I fear for the month most likely to be filled with police blotter activity. Too much time on the player's hands.

Hopefully, with the release of Cedric Benson, we have taken care of sending the warning shot across the bow of every player still on the team.

Lay low Chicago Bears, lay low. At least for 5 weeks.

This story is going to end up being as big as spygate or the baseball steroid scandal if there is any justice in the world.

Dallas area illicit steroid dealer David Jacobs recently testified to Commissioner Goodell naming names of players he dealt thousands of steroids to over the last few years. Matt Lehr was one of his customers that has already been leeked, but according to Jacobs himself, the people he named were likely to put a bullet in the back of his head.

Now he and his girlfriend have been murdered.

This BETTER be a huge story.

This time last year, we had made the same amount of signings, but with fewer picks it seemed as though we were on a torrid pace.

I certainly hope that the training camp issues revolve much more around competition for starting roster spots than holdouts. No one wins in those circumstances.

It's good to hear about Hester chasing a homerun ball down and to hear that the Defense appears poised for a return to glory. I just want more of it.

I don't even care if we focus on the "QB battle", despite each candidate throwing 3 INT's.

Gimme Training Camp. I need stories each day.
Oh, and I contacted Richard Dent's official site. Hopefully we can get a few things rolling to keep attention focused on him for the Hall.

Is it me, or did this season just fly by???

It seems like this season went by so quickly, and we really didn't accomplish much!

What did we accomplish?

1) With being more aggressive on defense, we lost the ability to stop the rush, AND pass

2) Tillman is our best cornerback, and he stepped up to the plate when needed!! IMO he is our season's MVP!

3) Rex Grossman got a chip knocked off his shoulders, FINALLY!!! Lovie FINALLY sent him the message that he will sit if he plays like garbage! Rex is still our best QB though. His long ball is top notch, he just needs to not do it so much!

4) Ron Turner can be creative, however his inability to address issues on the fly is terrible. Let's face it, our offensive line stinks, which leads me to #5!

5) Our line is getting old. John Tait got beat more times than Tina Turner! I mean, there were plays where he must have been thinking about his retirement vice blocking. How many times did he NOT even touch the guy??

6) Benson doesn't appear to be the guy. Now last year, I know I said he could "carry the load". Under the current line, he's going to be in trouble. Give him a lane and he can produce. However, his poor YPC are right there with Emmitt Smith in Arizona!!

7) Berrian is a top notch WR. He still needs more coaching, but he is our best WR right now. Will the Bears keep him???

8) On the Bears official site, they have the top ten plays of the season. Who do you link the player is featured in 90% of them??? Devin Hester of course.. What can't he do?? The problem is they are using him like Kordell Stewart. (when in Pitts) They try to put him in when they run a trick play. Teams can see it a mile away! Now, he's the man no doubt. He's not like Kordell, but the way they use him, is. When Kordell goes into the huddle, you knew it was some trick play.

Devin Hester is probbly the most explosive player in the league. There isn't ANY team in the NFL that wouldn't want him!

We do have to be careful not to get him hurt.

The off season moves will be interesting! Will Jerry Angelo address the issues? Or just draft another RB????

I'm still shocked he drafted Benson!!! Who knows, he'll probably draft a MLB.. lol

Week 15 was a week for many teams who before thought they were great, to be humbled a little, as they either
A: lost
or
B: squeaked by a pathetic team.

The first to immediately come to mind would be the juggernaut of sports today, the New England Patriots. The spread for them to win Sunday's game against the Jets? 23.5. Yeah, that's not a typo. Bookies were expecting the biggest massacre we've seen since the show "Cavemen" premiered on ABC. The lowly Jets came in prepared, however, and only lost by 10. That's not bad for a team coached by a man who needs to be at the college level. Now, as strange as this sounds, the momentum has shifted in favor of the Dolphins for next weeks game of teams with a combined 15 wins, 14 of which belong to The Pats.

Which brings me to my next team, the Buffalo Bills. Yes, I know, this must be some kind of joke, mentioning the Bills in this type of column. Yet, alot of Bills fans had serious hopes of making the playoffs, but the shutout loss in the Dog House yesterday definitely killed their shot at making it to the big dance (as if it would have mattered). Now, suddenly, there is very little room left on the Browns bandwagon, so you better hop on while you still have a chance!

The Pittsburgh Steelers were somewhat of a favorite in the AFC North this season, and they are staying true to that. They have led the division pretty much all year, but yesterday's loss to the great team that nobody gives a damn about totally hurt them. The Browns are now tied in record with the Squealers, and it's gonna be a dogfight (seriously, no pun intended) for the division title. Okay, seriously, does anybody care about Jacksonsville?

To keep my AFC trend going, I'll move on to the Indianapolis Colts. They jump out to a quick lead early against the lowly Raiders, and things are looking swell, as they should. Yet, they manage to find a way to play like crap and let Oakland get in the game, and nearly win it, had it not been for some rookie mistakes by some non-rookies. Peyton Manning would have been my "awful quarterback of the week", but unfortunately, I had the displeasure of watching the Giants play the Redskins. Also, some good news for the Colts, they wrapped up the AFC South division championship, with their 12th win, and the Titans playoffs are slim-to-none, kinda like most of the Titans' WR's stats.

To move onto the conference that we care about, I might as well start with the team we care about. As if things hadn't gone bad enough this season, Bears starting quarterback made an odd announcement today:

"I can not use my electronic helmet to call plays, as it's against the ways of the Amish. Seriously, does my neckbeard draw that much attention? Pour me another shot, Lance!"

The Detroit Lions had a glimmer of hope for making the playoffs going into Sunday, even after losing 5 straight games. Hell, just look at the box score. http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=271216024
That's all that needs to be said. They got beat down worse than a college student at a John Kerry assembly. Don't tase me, bro!

The oh-so-dominant Cowboys offense was held to a pair of field goals yesterday against a lowly Eagles defense. On the final "play" of the game, Brian Westbrook broke through the line and kneeled at the one yard line to lock up a win. He was on his knees faster than Anna Benson in the Orioles locker room. It was a smart decision though, as the Eagles badly needed this win.
I'll take a minute to rest while you take in that sarcasm.

Seatle, are you serious? You had made me into a believer, too! You guys had assembled a team of.. well, not much. This definitely isn't that team that reached the Super Bowl just two years ago, but you all sure had been playing like it recently. Congratulations on letting the Carolina Panthers beat you. It's hard to believe they've won 6 games this season with a team like that.
The Giants were brought down-to-earth as well yesterday, as they were beaten by the Washington Redskins, who started Punter Todd Collins at Quarterback. Wait, you mean he's an actual quarterback? Oh, well, damn. He sure didn't play like one. He went 8-25 with 166 yards and one vicious looking stare.
And finally, last, but certainly not least. The newly-crowned NFC South Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers certainly put up the points, but their defense should be ashamed of themselves. 3 points? Come on, anything other than a shutout against Atlanta is disgraceful! In the eternal words of Brian Urlacher: "Seems like we always screw up or do something stupid every game."
Remember that quote when you're about to let Atlanta score 3 points, Jon Gruden.
Much love to the readers, and I'll be sure to add Adrian Peterson to this list tomorrow when he fumbles 3+ times tonight! Go Bears! :bearbang[
